              Since 1976, Education is joint responsibility of the States and the Centre , before it was the responsibility of the states and the Central Government’s only responsibility was to co-ordinate in technical and higher education and specify standards.

             The Centre is represented by Ministry of Human Resource Development’s Department of Education www.education.nic.in and together with the states, it is jointly responsible for the formulation of education policy and planning. Education in India is comparatively much cheaper and is of high quality as compared to any other country. The Higher Education in India is monitered by University Grants Commission (UGC) www.ugc.nic.in

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - The Institutes were set up by the Government of India. Almost all reputed international academic benchmarks have given them high rating. There are Seven IITs in the country located at the following places:

Indian Insitute of Management (IIM) - These are ace Business Schools established by the Government of India whose passouts proved their mettle at Harvard, LSE and Kellog. There are Six IIMs in the country located at the followong place:

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) All-India Institute of Medical Sciences - (http://aiims.ac.in ) was created in 1956 to serve as a nucleus for nurturing excellence in all aspects of health care. It was established as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament with the objects to develop patterns of teaching in Undergraduate and Post-graduate Medical Education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of Medical Education in India

Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) - Jawaharlal Nehru University (http://jnu.ac.in ) is located in New Delhi, is among the premier universities in India in the field of Liberal arts, Languages, Political Science and Economics. The JNU campus is a microcosm of the Indian nation, drawing students from every nook and corner of the country and from every group and stratum of society. To make sure that this is so, annual admission tests are simultaneously held at 37 centres spread across the length and breadth of the country, and special care is taken to draw students from the underprivileged castes and ethic groups by reserving 22.5 per cent of seats for them. Overseas students form some 10 percent of the annual intake.Students' hostels and blocks of faculty residences are interspersed with one another, underlining the vision of a large Indian family Several Centres in these Schools have been declared by the UGC to be Centres of 'Excellence'. These are Centre for Historical Studies, Centre for the Study of Social Systems, Centre for Political Studies, Centre for Economic Studies and Planing, Centre for the Study of Regional Development, all in the School of Social Sciences. In addition three Science Schools - School of Physical Sciences, School of Life Sciences and School of Environmental Sciences have also received the UGC recognition as Centers for Excellence.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) - Indira Gandhi National Open University (http://ignou.ac.in) was established in 1985 to provide distance learning to remote and disadvantaged students of any age. It helps in democratization of education in India. IGNOU offers certificate, diploma, graduate, post-graduate and PhD distance education courses.It has regional centres all over India, including Indian air-force, army and navy recognized centres. Its courses are also available in 26 countries.
